Good Day
I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you my experience with “leveraging fashion” in my career and my everyday life. In the ‘50s my mother was a seamstress with the International Women’s Garment Workers Union, making the clothes for Saks Fifth Avenue, Peck and Peck, and other high-end retailers. I grew up have an interest in fashion trends and how to look my best. I have leveraged fashion in 3 important ways:
1. Today, I have a company that specializes in environmental marketing and I set a goal to lose over 50 pounds and to change my entire image. The impact has been incredible in terms of changing the idea of what an “environmentalist” looks like. It has up the ante in terms of my fees, getting key interviews, and projecting credibility when I have to present to corporate audiences.
2. At 53 I want to dress “age appropriate” but still project sexuality, sophistication, and a unique style. I carefully track fashion trends that I can interpret for all the roles of my life. My mother taught me early the importance of a quality handbag, great shoes, and most important – the fit of my wardrobe.
3. On a daily basis I use fashion to also support my sense of well being and self-confidence. I’m always on the lookout for fashionable training gear for the weightlifting I enjoy. I need a small wardrobe “capsule” for the traveling I have to do for my company so I feel powerful minutes after getting off a plane and having to meet with a room full of strangers. Most important, I had to find apparel that made me feel sexy and confident in my everyday life with my friends and my husband.
