Skin care Tips For Teens
We consulted with Ann from Todays-Women-and-Health and she gave us some great advice for staying healthy while having fun in the sun.
Sunscreen Tips for Teens
It's summertime fun time, but don't forget sunscreen as you head outside! The more natural the ingredients the better.
You know your skin needs protection from the sun's UVB and UVA rays, but you don't have to hibernate indoors to be protected.
In the teen years, your skin is resilient and firm. It's easy to forget the dangers of the sun's UV rays.
The amount of sun you receive and the number of sunburns has an impact on skin cancer. This isn't the only determining factor of course, but it does play a role.
By the time you are 18 you will have received approximately eighty percent of your lifetime exposure to the sun.
Managing sun and skin care now will give you younger looking skin as you age and help reduce the risks of skin cancer.
Sunscreen Tips
1) Choose a sunscreen with an SPF (Sunscreen Protection Factor) of 15 to 30. SPF15 blocks approximately 93% of the sun's UV rays and SPF30 blocks approximately 97%.
2) Choose a sunscreen that states "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic." This prevents your skin pores from clogging.
3) Put your sun lotion on thirty minutes before you head outside for the best protection. For the best protection use it on cloudy days as well because eighty percent of the sun's UV rays are present even when it's cloudy.
4) Reapply your sunscreen after swimming, exercising or perspiring. Even drying off with the towel removes your sun lotion. Sunscreens may state they are water resistant, but they aren't waterproof. You should also reapply every 2 to 3 hours that you're outside.
5) UV rays are the strongest between 11AM and 4PM. Apply your sun lotion often and take an "inside break" if you can.
6) Many surfaces such as concrete, water, ice and snow reflect UV rays. Make sure to use plenty of sun protection when you're around reflective surfaces.
7) Prescription medications can enhance your skin's sensitivity to the sun. If you're on any medications, increase your sun protection.
8) Using sun lotion daily also prevents dry skin, aging skin and skin cancer. Don't fear you're using "too much" protection, it's not harmful to your skin.
9) UV rays can also harm your eyes so wear good sunglasses with UV protection when you're outside.
10) Wear loose, light cotton fabrics to help protect your skin when you're out. "Cool" clothes can be cool in more ways than one!
You can still get a glowing tan the fake way! You can use salon tanners or self tanners.
Beware of tanning beds though. Manufacturers state they have removed the UVB ray problems; however they do have UVA rays which are harmful!
