Our Interview with Fred Sweet of San Diego Model Management
San Diego Model Management Information:
San Diego Model Management is San Diego's largest agency in dollar bookings. We are a SAG/AFTRA franchised agency in our second decade of service to our models and clients. We work will all major agencies in the United States and worldwide.
We book from all the major clients in the United States including: Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Nike, Petco, UPS, Talbots, Tommy Bahama, Budweiser Beer, and many, many others too numerous to mention.
Our models have appeared on every major fashion magazine cover giving San Diego Model Management a well known and respected reputation worldwide. We place models with affiliated agencies in Europe and Asia, as well as major market agencies here in the United States. Both Denise Richards and Stephanie Seymour were with us early in their stellar careers.
We work extensively with many European clients including German, English, Dutch, French, and others who shoot their productions here in the Southern California area. We take pride in the fact that, because of our relationship over the years, we have clients that only shoot with us when they come to town.
What we are generally looking for is the following:
- Women fashion: 5'7¨ to 6
- Women petite: 5'2¨ to 5'5
- Women plus size: 5'8¨ to 6 & size 14 to 18
- Men: 5'10¨ to 6'2
- Kids: who can easily take instruction
- Actors and Actresses: must have some on screen credits
San Diego Model Management is divided into the following divisions:
- Print ά
- Runway ά
- Commercial Print ά
- Talent ά
- Promotional/Trade Show ά
- Kids ά
Our SAG/AFTRA franchised Talent Division is fully integrated with the Southern California digital casting network. This includes television episodics, industrial videos, national commercials, and non-broadcast videos. In this very competitive area it is necessary to have some type of on-screen credits to be considered for our Talent Division.
We are licensed by the State of California as a talent agency. We are not a school, do not offer training, and do not sell or take pictures.
Like all legitimate model agencies we receive our commissions in 2 ways. From clients who pay us to have one place that organizes quality models in one place; and, from models who pay the agency to promote them and negotiate their bookings to clients.

Frequently Asked Questions from San Diego Model Management -
How old do I have to be to start?
Kids or Children
This category is from infants to 12 years old. Kids of all ages can model.
Women
There is no hard and fast rule if and when a girl in the Kids category goes over to the Womens category. This is obvious when you consider that there are girls who are 13 years old, 510, and look like high fashion models, and, others who are 13, 53 and look like a little kid. It simply does not make sense to market them in the same way.
If a persons goal is to be developed as a High Fashion Print model in one of the top modeling capitols of the world such as New York, LA, London, Paris, Tokyo, and others, then they should start applying to the big agencies see our list when they get to be a teen and are around 56 and are expected to grow taller.
If a girl has been applying in her teen years and gets to be 20 and still has not been signed by a major agency, then her chances are really quite small that she is going to do any High Fashion Print modeling in the major markets. We really hate to tell you this but in this business anyone over 20 is considered over the hill for high fashion print development.
If a persons goal is to model in their hometown or region then the requirements are much more relaxed. Most broad based agencies accept submissions from persons of all ages even if they have had little or no experience.
It is the nature of our society that while there is a large market for women in their teens it somehow does not translate to a similar market for men in their teens. Therefore men generally can start in their 20s and 30s. If they live a market large enough they can apply even into their senior years.
Can I become just a "face" or body part model such as hands, feet, or legs?
The answer is generally no. The vast majority of agencies simply use their regular models for these types of assignments. Some models have two composite cards, one for "body parts" and the other for their regular print work.
Count yourself out if you have:
-A bad complexion. Hopefully this is obvious.
-Are balding both men and women.
-Some unusual facial feature
-One eye is half closed at all times
-Double or triple chin
-Blood shot eyes
-Bad teeth
-A beard or mustache if youre a woman
-Jet black hair and have the face of a 65 year old (this does not look right)
How tall do I have to be to model?
This all depends on what type of modeling you want to go into. Use the following as a general guideline:
Women:
High Fashion Print: 5'7" - 6'
(there are new faces in NY and LA agencies at 56 but not many)
Runway: 5'9" - 6'
Petite: 5'2" - 5'4"
Plus Size: 5'9" - 6' and between size 14 to 20
Promotional/Trade Show: No height requirement
Kids:
No height requirement but appropriate for their age.
Acting/Talent:
No height requirement
Men: 5'10" - 6'3"
