Public Relations

by Christina Helms

My name is Christina Helms and I am a public relations account manager based in the Southeast. Your query struck a chord with me because I am addicted to fashion as evidenced by my subscription/purchase of at least 4-5 fashion magazines per month, my long list of bookmarked fashion blogs and my weekly E-bay and online department store and boutique shopping habit.

While I have a strong sense for what I like – which is a variety of styles from menswear-inspired business suits to ladylike Jackie O/Grace Kelly throwback items from the 60s -- I look to the magazines (ads and editorial) for inspiration on how to advance my style and to keep up with the trends. I regularly study the styles, then try to replicate the looks using my EBay and discount shopping strategies.

Because I want to remain in style, healthy and youthful looking I do work out for at least an hour, five days per week and maintain a healthy diet. So many clothes just do not lie appropriately if you have a pudgy tummy or oversize thighs -- it just makes you look sloppy and older than you actually are. I also feel that maintaining your ideal weight or a little below it, can make even inexpensive clothing look like high-quality fashion. (I know I’ve rocked my Isaac Mizrahi suit from Target and have received numerous compliments from clients and co-workers.) The trick is to mix the inexpensive pieces with expensive designer pieces to integrate the look and add a pop of interest.

DO MODELS REALLY NEED PUBLIC RELATIONS?
by: DD WILLIAM-WEST

I am DD William-West, a public relations practitioner and teaher in Lagos, Nigeria.

I have watched with amazement at the way many models and performing artistes in these part carry on as if they have all the answers to current, evolving and unknown problems. I feel even worse seeing that even when they do not seem to learn from another's avoidable problem(s).

Where timely preventive and pro-active public relations would have saved these stars from embarassing situations, they try to manage their multi-faceted challenges and opportunities all by themselves. The result is outright fiasco.

So, I ask again: Do models and performing artistes really need Public Relations? I would like to know. Feel free to check up www.nubconsulting.blogspot.com and possibly comment on issues raised there.
