Interview Photographer Greg Hadel

Greg Hadel is a Nationally published photographer with 15 years of experience. Greg has been published in Maxim, FHM, and Playboy and has worked with top fortune five hundred companies in advertising.

During our interview with Greg we asked him to answer some of our questions on Modeling for stock photography.

Top questions models have about stock photography?

What is stock photography?

Basically stock photography is a rental agency for images. Companies search for images when they have a specific need for and negotiate a price or buy a CD of images. Uses can range from a textbook to outdoor billboard, just depending on what the need is from the company. Also the usage and time of use can be negotiated as part of the deal and good saleable images sell over and over again. The major issue of stock photography has been the advent of the royalty free discs, resulting in dramatic prices drops for stock images over the past few years.

Does a model need to sign a release to shoot stock images?

Yes, the model does. The model can either get a paid rate as a buyout or negotiate a percentage of any future sale. Just make sure that all negotiated rates or percentages are clearly stated in the model release.

What are some examples of where a model's images may be used?

Again there is no limit to what the images can be used for, as well as what rates can be negotiated for these images.

Is it considered a buyout when a model shoots stock images?

Not necessarily, unless its agreed upon by both parties and the model receives a fair rate for a buyout. The model does have to remember that there is no guarantee of sales, so the photographer does incur expenses to produce the images.

What do you look for in a model?

ahh, BE ON TIME, lol. My pet peeve as well as most photographers. Also be prepared for the shoot, clean hair, nails done, wear sweats for no lines on body etc etc. That's the sign of a professional model, and of course a great attitude makes the shoot much more fun.

Thanks so much Greg we had so much fun doing this interview - to see more of Greg's beautiful photography.
