Modeling Questions - How Much Are Models Paid?

Your Modeling Questions Answered!
Our question of the month comes to us from reader member Kyle James.
Kyle asks us how much do models get paid and how do they get paid for modeling jobs.
Hi Kyle great question:
Models are paid through their modeling agencies. The agency takes a percentage of 10% – 20% for each booking that the agency books for the model. These percentages are standard in the modeling industry. These are percentage rates in the United States it varies on taxes from Country to Country with Europe being 50% of bookings to country.
How it works
The Modeling Job or assignment is called a Booking. The client books the job with the models’ agent.
The model does the booking and signs a voucher this voucher is used for contract of payment to model and agency.
The voucher will have a signature from the client and the model and the model will turn this voucher into their agency for payment.
Some agencies will wait for payment from the client, some will give advance to models that work all the time and have other bookings on the chart.
It can take anywhere from two weeks to 3 months for payment to agency and then to model. Advertising jobs will take a little longer as there is an additional step of client who booked the job paying the advertising agency then the next step to pay the modeling agency.
How much are models paid for booking jobs.
There are several different types of payment scales.
We will not discuss super model rates as this level of modeling is very individual.
As well as campaigns – that can pay in the thousands and thousands.
We will discuss the everyday modeling bookings that most models work.
The first is Catalog and Print work
This is the bread and butter work for models. Many print clients book the same models over and over and this type of account can be very lucrative.
The rates for catalog can range depending on the model and also depending on client and country working in. A model working catalog for a department store or catalog house can expect to be paid anywhere from $800 a day up to $ 3000 for high end catalog bookings and up.
Fashion Show bookings, Models working shows will be paid anywhere from 75 an hour to $ 250 an hour depending on length of show.
Showroom modeling & fit modeling are around the same rates beginning at $ 25 an hour to $ 250 an hour in New York.
TV non union TV commercials, models can make anywhere from $ 300 a day to a few thousand depending on the model and the client.
Union TV is based on scale wages and payment is SAG based.
Editorial rates are the least in the industry but these bookings can be some of the most important bookings as far as building your book and having exposure.
Rates can be anywhere from $ 150 a day up to $ 1000 a day depending on the magazine model is working for and models experience.
A new model may even do editorial work for free as they can get exposure for the shoot, great tear sheets for their book and sometimes magazines will give model name credit for the magazine issue. There is also the added benefit of working with great stylists, makeup artists and photographers.
Trade Shows models working trade shows and conventions as models for a particular client at an event can make anywhere from $25 an hour to $ 250 depending on the model and client and how big the convention is. The days are usually full day bookings or half day.
Full day bookings are any booking that is 8 – 10 hour days.
Half day bookings are 4 hour bookings Most time a half day will be a 9 – 12 or a 1 – 5 so the client can split the day with two models one working the morning and the second working the afternoon.
There are also hourly bookings that the client pays by the hour. Sometimes an agency will have a two hour minimal for the models which means that even if the shoot only takes 30 minutes the model will still be paid for two hours.
As you can see there are many different rates that are used to pay models depending on the booking and what type of booking the model is working on.
In addition there are also some fee’s associated with bookings
Fitting fees
Travel fees
Hotel fees
And overtime rates
