Sylvia's Hollister Modeling Story!
No one ever wakes up thinking, "This is it. This is the day that will change my life forever." That just doesn't happen in the real world. Instead, I rose up one early morning in late August to my father’s violent shakes. "Wake up Sylvia, It’s time to hit the road!" I rolled over and looked at him crossly. “I'm not going!” It was the day of our family vacation and, of course, my father's wonderful idea that we go right in the middle of cheer tryouts. I broke down in tears as I imagined the priceless bonding experiences I would miss out on at Cheerleading Camp.
My two brothers and I crammed into the car and we were off to Virginia Beach to my great dismay. After our arrival, we met up with some of my father’s old friends for a hotel party that evening. I wanted to get back at my dad by doing everything I could to look miserable and make everyone around me feel the same. Dad’s friend had a son who had a crush on me. He had asked me if I wanted to get some soda for the party. I wanted to say,” No” because I knew THAT would grab my Dad’s attention, but something inside of me couldn’t do it. I went.
We walked down the boulevard towards a store and he went in to get the soda. As I waited, I was approached by a man. He asked me if I had ever modeled before and if not, would I be interested in doing so. My first reaction was to walk away.
I began to recall the wild stories I had heard about girls being discovered on the street. The man gave me his name and number and wrote it down on a small card, then handed it to me. I read it aloud, “Abercrombie and Fitch?” It was the same letters printed on many of the shirts I saw in school. “Yup,” he replied. “Feel free to look me up if you are still unsure.”
I took the card from him and looked at him closely. I didn’t believe it could happen to me. I took the man back to the hotel lobby to have him meet Dad. Upstairs, I flashed the card in front of Dad’s face. “Downstairs, There’s a model, I mean man. No, yes. He wants me to model for this.” I showed him the card. He studied it and looked away. “I can’t see him right now Sylvia, you see I’m busy.” “Please Dad,” I pleaded anxiously. “No, not right now. We’ve been through this before. He’s probably just another scammer.” I felt the tears ready behind my eyes, but then I remembered he was downstairs waiting. I ran downstairs to tell the man the news.
“Oh, Okay well you have my number if your father changes his mind. Tell him it’s just a couple fashion Polaroids and it will only take a second.” He walked through the door and my heart dropped as I felt my dreams go right along with him. I wasn’t about to let this opportunity pass me by. I took the card, now scrunched and sweaty from my tight grip, and searched the website he had given me. There he was. I couldn’t believe it. This was the proof I needed to convince Dad to let me go the next morning.
We arrived on the beach the next morning and, like he said, it only took a second to take the pictures and he was gone. He said he would contact me if they liked me. On the way home, I fell asleep but before closing my eyes I looked at my Dad and thanked him for dragging me on this stupid trip. I guess it wasn’t so stupid after all.
About a month later, I got a call after coming home from school. They had liked me and before I knew it, I was on a plane to Santa Barbara, California! This was the start of my new fashion life. I had a photo shoot with world-renown photographer Bruce Weber and was featured on 12 foot high posters in Hollister Co. stores around the country.
I knew from that point on that I could pursue my dreams, of not only becoming a fashion model, but also a surgeon. Later that year, I decided to begin taking classes in college. I was only a high school sophomore at the time! I am now one year out of high school and will be graduating college and attending a four-year institution as a junior this year. I recently signed with Click Models. I now thank God for each day, because any one of them could be the one that changes your life forever.
And now you can see why we just think she is so adorable!
